This work exemplifies the core theme in my newest series, ‘Cascades’. What stands out differently is the dominate rigid blue bar that appears in so many other works, is now taken a contoured form. Its whipping movement, launches the shard like glass into a maelstrom of kinetic flight. Aptly titled ‘Inflection Point’, the interplay between spacial participants begins.
It’s helpful to share my artistic intentions through abstraction because it is not didactic or linear in thought. It just allows us some distance from the material world. In this work, there’s concerns of actions leading to chain-reactions that cascade down, effortlessly paralleling our contemporary moment.
I imagine you all know my work well, but perhaps less about who I call my friendly competition – the rigorous circle of contemporary artists that also work within the genre of experimental, non-camera based photography. Not exactly mainstream, but it’s growing lure is an art genre that draws on older traditions of pre-digital methods of creation to respond to contemporary culture.
If you collect and follow my work, you might also think about adding anyone of these artists to your collection as well (though some pieces go for handsome figures). What I find interesting is how varyingly different each artist is.

Mary Hardin Center for Cultural Arts

The Mary Hardin Center for Cultural Arts, presents 20 works by Richard Slechta for his solo exhibition ‘Cascades’.
About the work:
In his photograms, Richard Slechta engages the basic dyad of presence and absence, giving it a striking immediacy. His art is minimal in its economy of means, a spare distribution of spiking lines, flaring discs, and other forms that seem shifting and transitory. Simultaneously, Slechta’s art is rich with visual sensation and emotive power. Everything we see is in the context of the photograms’ pristine white space.
Looking at the animated forms as they emerge from the white field we are confronted by the twin conundrums of how they came into being and how they make us feel. The photograms begin with creating paintings on clear plastic sheets. The paintings are then reinterpreted using gestures of chromatic light onto light sensitive photographic paper. The recorded exposures coalesce into the final shapes, colors and textures.
Slechta’s work is abstract, a congruence of process and poetry that does not depict, but rather stimulates a wide range of associations. Forms often suggest dark shadows or burned traces, evidence of an unspoken conflagration. The auras that surround them seem to imply that the darkness is a deep concentration of color, made visible only at its margins. The spiked arrays moving across space are like readouts of seismic events or vital signs. The discs move more freely, points of energy in contrast to the long lines of oscillations.
Slechta’s photograms have a sense of expansiveness and disorientation, as if we are moving through a dimension beyond our own. The forms are wave-like phantoms, vibrantly there, dilating and contracting, but ready to vanish. These works do not call for narrative responses, rather they allow us to immerse ourselves in a domain without language. Paradoxically, the titles of the works point us beyond words to states of being. The titles speak of knowing, induction, causation, breakage, and release. These are not descriptions of the photograms, but instead a way of awakening our responses to the moral implication of this art.
In the white space of these works, we enter a kind of active emptiness, capable of generating vivid colors and profound darkness. This space is the matrix out of which the visual takes form and back into which it sinks. The implications of this are existential – we see in the drama of forms an inevitable reflection of our own lives.
Nestled above the Sunset Strip in the Hollywood Hills, Slechta’s artworks become a feature of this modernists Tag Front architectural gem.

The California Center for the Arts, Escondido will present 17 works by Richard Slechta for the group exhibition surveying the varied conceptual approaches to photography. Richard will be featuring nearly all new works including the much anticipated installation, Precariously Bright.

Richard’s artwork arrived in Basel on Friday in advance preparation for the curated exhibition at gallery Projektraum M54, running with Art Basel. Richard is looking forward to flying-out in less than two weeks to partake in the full spectrum of exhibitions and introduce his work to the European audience. We are look forward to sharing photo’s from the exhibition.
Below, earlier last week, the artwork was carefully wrapped, sealed and boxed for FedEx transport.
Ping Pong LA @ LA Art Show

Richard joined the curated exhibition, ‘Ping Pong’ at the LA Art Show, the 200,000 square foot modern and contemporary art fair that welcomed more than 60,000 art enthusiasts to the Los Angeles Convention Center. For this exhibition Richard introduced new works from the ‘Junctions’ collection.
A Delicious 2015 BBQ
Richard’s Annual Open Studio & BBQ is located in the Downtown LA Arts District, two blocks from the renowned L.A. River surrounded by galleries and hipster coffee shops and scrap yards. This is always a great time to explore my studio, learn more about my art making practice and most importantly, see what’s new.

The International Museum of Art and Science in Texas has acquired a piece for their permanent collection. This makes the second museum to acquire Richard’s work in 2015.
Science Spectrum Museum

The Science Spectrum Museum is hosting the solo exhibition featuring 25 works from Richard Slechta’s ‘Inherent Trajectories’ series. The artworks are playful expressions of kinetic and potential energies releasing speed and gravity amidst fields of pure space. These are creations based in chemistry, physics and light that exemplify the pairing of both art and science.
